Lace is worked in fine linen thread. It is raised needlelace similar
in method to the flat Youghal needlelace. The raised effect of
Inishmacsaint is achieved by additional outlining sewn on to the
lace after completion. The raised areas are usually around the
outside of flowers and other important parts of the design. The
outlining is known as the cordonnett which is a thickish cord
that can be further elevated by couched padding oversewn with
buttonhole stitching. The finished lace has a raised three-demensional
appearance.
